Project Overview
As part of a wider refurbishment programme, York Steiner School required new flooring for key teaching and staff areas. The brief called for a hard-wearing solution that could withstand the demands of a busy school environment, while also aligning with the school’s educational values, which emphasise calm, sensory-aware spaces that support wellbeing and focus.
Heckmondwike supplied Supacord carpet in Lavender, chosen not only for its durability and ease of maintenance, but also for its contribution to a well-integrated interior. The muted lavender tone reflects the school’s preference for natural, harmonious colours—an important part of the Waldorf-inspired design approach, which views the learning environment as an extension of the curriculum and a key influence on children’s development.
Project Requirements
The flooring solution needed to deliver both practical performance and alignment with the school’s design and pedagogical priorities:
- Durability and resilience for high-traffic use, ensuring longevity in dynamic teaching spaces
- Acoustic comfort to help maintain the quiet, rhythmic atmosphere encouraged by Waldorf teaching methods
- A tactile, comfortable surface suitable for younger pupils, supporting sensory development and physical connection with the space
- Muted, natural tones to promote emotional balance and create a visually soothing, cohesive aesthetic
- Verified environmental credentials, aligning with the school’s focus on sustainability and respect for the natural world
Supacord met all these requirements, balancing both the functional needs and the holistic values central to York Steiner School’s ethos.
Installation and Project Delivery
The installation was expertly carried out by Geoff Acomb & Sons Ltd, a trusted flooring contractor based in York. Known for tailoring their services to the unique needs of every client, their attention to detail ensured the flooring was installed efficiently and to the highest standard. Appointed by Sorrells Building Contractors, their team managed the full scope of works, including:
- Uplift and removal of existing floor coverings
- Mechanical removal of adhesive residues
- Subfloor preparation using Ardex P51 primer and a 3mm layer of Ardex CL smoothing compound
- Installation of Supacord using Ardex AF325 adhesive
The project was completed over two days during the school summer holidays, ensuring minimal disruption and a high-quality finish, ready for use at the start of the new academic year.
Outcome
The refurbishment provided a flooring solution that combines long-lasting performance with the school’s educational values. Supacord’s robust construction and sound-reducing qualities address the needs of a high-traffic environment, while its gentle lavender shade fosters a serene and attentive learning space.
