Waltham Forest Churches Night Shelter (WFCNS), based in northeast London, supports former homeless people and rough sleepers, helping them rebuild their lives and develop the life skills needed to live independently.
In 2023, WFCNS purchased its first dedicated ‘move-on’ accommodation, called Stepping Stones, a large six-bedroom Victorian house. Stepping Stones is a second-stage home which aims to support residents who have left WFCNS’s Branches Hostel, providing up to 18 months of additional support and services before they transition into fully independent living.
However, the property was rundown and deteriorating. It required extensive refurbishment works to transform it into a safe, welcoming, and sustainable space. The house was completely redesigned by Cullinan Studio, with the project supported by CRASH, a construction industry charity.
As a long-standing CRASH supporter, Heckmondwike supplied 140 square metres of Supacord in Pale Olive at a significantly discounted rate, providing durable and comfortable flooring throughout the shared spaces and bedrooms of the newly refurbished property.
Supacord was specified because it is:
- Durable enough to withstand the demands of shared living
- Easy to maintain, helping ensure the home remains clean and welcoming
- Cost-effective, supporting the project’s charitable objectives
- Responsibly manufactured, reflecting the wider eco-conscious goals of the retrofit
The Pale Olive colourway symbolises nature, growth, and a fresh start for residents as they move toward independent living. Seeing the space come together with such warmth and intention has been incredibly rewarding.
This project was a flagship initiative for CRASH, bringing together 14 Corporate Patrons and Supporters who donated their professional expertise and materials within tight deadlines, ultimately saving the charity over £83,000.
The official opening of Stepping Stones took place in May 2025, celebrating what can be achieved when companies across the built environment collaborate for social good.
