Supacord’s Role in a Homeless Housing Project

Sectors: Architecture and Development

Products: Supacord,

At Heckmondwike, we’re proud to have contributed to the transformation of Stepping Stones, a new ‘move-on’ accommodation project led by Waltham Forest Churches Night Shelter, in partnership with the construction industry charity CRASH. This vital facility supports residents as they transition towards independent living.

As a long-standing CRASH supporter, Heckmondwike supplied 140 square metres of Supacord in Pale Olive at a significantly discounted rate, providing durable and comfortable flooring throughout the shared spaces of the newly refurbished property.

About The Project

Waltham Forest Churches Night Shelter, based in northeast London, supports former homeless people and rough sleepers, helping them rebuild their lives and develop the life skills needed to live independently.

In 2023, Waltham Forest Churches Night Shelter purchased its first dedicated ‘move-on’ accommodation, a six-bedroom house near their Branches hostel. The property needed extensive refurbishment to make it a safe and welcoming home.

With support from CRASH and its patrons, the house was redesigned to meet ambitious sustainability goals. Designed by Cullinan Studio, the property has been retrofitted with the aim of meeting EnerPHit standards, applying Passivhaus design principles to reduce energy demand from 219 kWh/m²a to just 28 kWh/m²a, an impressive 87% improvement.

Our Role

As the carpet manufacturer, we understood the importance of providing a flooring solution that is:

  • Durable enough to withstand the demands of shared living
  • Easy to maintain, to ensure the home stays clean and welcoming

  • Cost-effective, to help support the project’s charitable goals

  • Responsibly manufactured, to reflect the wider eco-conscious aims of the retrofit

Our Supacord carpet tiles were selected for their proven performance in high-traffic environments, including education, housing, and public sector settings.

The Pale Olive colourway was chosen not only for its practicality in shared spaces, but also for the feeling it brought to the rooms — calm, uplifting, and full of new energy.

The choice of green was more than just a design decision; it symbolised nature, growth, and a fresh start for residents as they move toward independent living. Seeing the space come together with such warmth and intention has been incredibly rewarding.

A Collective Effort

This project was a flagship initiative for CRASH, bringing together 14 Corporate Patrons and Supporters who donated their professional expertise and materials, ultimately saving the charity over £83,000. The official opening of Stepping Stones took place this year, celebrating what can be achieved when companies across the built environment collaborate for social good.

We’re proud that our carpets have contributed to a place that helps people on their journey to permanent housing, reinforcing our belief that good design and practical solutions can change lives.
