The new-build development at Emmanuel Community School in Walthamstow set out to create a modern, high-performing educational environment — and achieved industry-wide recognition for doing so. The project was named Winner of the 2025 Contract Flooring Journal (CFJ) Award for Best Use of Flooring in Education, celebrating both the quality of the Supacord specification and the excellence of its installation.
Led by main contractor Kier Construction, the project required a robust, low-maintenance flooring solution suitable for high-traffic, multi-use school spaces. Supacord carpet tiles were installed throughout the two-storey building, including classrooms, corridors, and staircases, with Battleship entrance matting added at key access points to enhance durability and cleanliness.
Project Requirements
The flooring specification needed to meet the following key criteria:
- Long-term durability for high-footfall areas
- Acoustic performance to support concentration
- Safety underfoot across all areas, including staircases
- A cohesive, professional aesthetic throughout the school
- Ease of cleaning and maintenance
- Compliance with sustainability standards

A total of 700m² of Supacord carpet tiles and 48m² of Battleship entrance matting were installed across the school. These products were selected for their proven performance in education environments.

Installation and Delivery
Installation was completed by Westcotes Flooring, a specialist contractor with extensive experience in education and public-sector projects.
Prior to installation, extensive subfloor preparation was required due to laitance and contamination left by other trades. Westcotes conducted full mechanical preparation to ensure a clean, level, and stable substrate—critical for long-term performance and adhesion.
The scope of work included:
- Installation across two full floors and two staircases
- Integration of entrance matting into the flooring system
- Adherence to a tight programme, coordinated closely with Kier Construction
Award-Winning Result
The completed project significantly enhanced the school environment, delivering on expectations for durability, acoustic performance, and safety. Its success was formally recognised at the 2025 Contract Flooring Journal (CFJ) Awards, where it won Best Use of Flooring in Education—a testament to the suitability of Supacord for demanding education settings and the high-quality installation by Westcotes Flooring.
