Northstowe Education Campus, Cambridgeshire

Supacord carpet tiles by Heckmondwike were the obvious choice for the award-winning Northstowe Education Campus, who installed 4,700 square metres of Heckmondwike’s best-selling product across several of their campus sites.

• Northstowe Education Campus is a new education site in Cambridgeshire. The site is home to a secondary school, sixth-form, primary school, alongside an SEN educational facility.

• Northstowe itself is a new sustainable town that is being built on the site of the former RAF Oakington base and surrounding farmland. Overall, there will 10,000 new homes built with a population of 25,000. Its development is a partnership between South Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and two Master Developers.

• Completed in summer 2020, the £45million Northstowe Education Campus delivers state of the art learning facilities for a total of 3,000 pupils.

• The project includes modern learning spaces, classrooms, sports and leisure facilities, a gymnasium, three activity studios, a learning resource centre and a 400-seat theatre/main hall for use by production companies.

• The school was developed in close consultation with the school sponsor, Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust alongside Cambridgeshire County Council and Homes England.

• Designed by Frank Shaw and constructed by main contractor, Kier, the site aims to be at the heart of the local area, creating spaces that can be shared by the community. It has been designed with a distinct finish that makes it stand out from the residential development, complete with a public frontage on to street level.

• The design has won Education Project of the Year at the Structural Timber awards 2020 and has also been shortlisted for Civic Building of the Year at the Spaces Awards 2021.

• With its close working relationship with Kier, Heckmondwike worked closely with key stakeholders to supply 4,700 square metres of its Supacord carpet tiles for use across several campus areas.

• Supacord is Heckmondwike’s leading fibre-bonded product. Manufactured in the UK at the company’s site in Liversedge, West Yorkshire since 1973, Supacord has built a reputation for being the leading carpet product for the education sector.
