Located in the heart of Port Sunlight’s Garden Village, the Gladstone Theatre is a cherished cultural landmark with roots dating back to 1888. Originally built as a community assembly hall by William Hesketh Lever, the venue has evolved into a vibrant performance space, renowned for its unique architectural features, most notably its elegant proscenium stage added in the 1920s. Today, the theatre continues to host a wide range of productions, from local operatic performances to touring artists, all under the stewardship of the Gladstone Theatre Trust.
As part of a wider commitment to preserving and revitalising the theatre as a lively community hub, new flooring was sought to enhance both comfort and aesthetics, helping ensure the venue remains a treasured space for future generations.
High Performance with a Classic Feel
With thousands of visitors passing through each year, the Gladstone Theatre needed a carpet that could withstand high footfall without compromising on comfort. Wellington Velour proved the ideal fit, combining the rich, plush feel of a traditional theatre carpet with the durability and performance required in a busy public space.

Visual Impact
The selected colour, Claret, brings warmth and depth to the interior, complementing the theatre’s period design and subtly accentuating architectural details such as gilded plasterwork and timber framing. The soft velour texture enhances the sense of luxury underfoot, while maintaining the hard-wearing qualities essential for performances, rehearsals, and daily community use.

Together, the colour and texture help create an inviting environment that draws visitors into the theatre’s timeless charm.
Acoustic Benefits
In a venue where sound quality matters, Wellington Velour also provides a practical advantage: a 24dB reduction in impact noise. This significantly improves acoustic comfort, especially in circulation areas and within the auditorium, contributing to a quieter, more immersive experience for audiences and performers alike.

Installation
The carpet was installed by Bogans Carpets, Liverpool, a trusted flooring specialist with extensive experience in high-traffic and heritage settings. Their attention to detail ensured the Wellington Velour carpet was fitted seamlessly, preserving the theatre’s historic features while delivering a modern finish built to last.
Working closely with the Gladstone Theatre Trust, Bogans brought the project to life on time and to exacting standards, supporting the theatre’s role as a welcoming, comfortable, and enduring cultural space.
Honouring Tradition with Modern Performance
The Gladstone Theatre installation highlights how Wellington Velour delivers more than just performance, it adds lasting value to spaces where first impressions, comfort, and heritage matter. With its rich texture, acoustic benefits, and timeless Claret finish, Wellington Velour helped transform a much-loved venue into a more refined and resilient environment, ready to welcome the next generation of audiences.
