Gladstone Theatre in Port Sunlight’s Garden Village is a historic cultural venue dating back to 1888. Originally built by William Hesketh Lever as a community assembly hall, it has evolved into a much-loved performance space hosting operatic productions, live performances, and community events. Today, it continues to operate under the Gladstone Theatre Trust, maintaining its role as a key cultural hub within the village.
As part of ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance the theatre for modern use, a new flooring solution was required that could support high footfall while respecting the building’s heritage character. The aim was to improve comfort, durability, and acoustic performance without compromising the theatre’s traditional aesthetic.
Wellington Velour in Claret was selected. Its rich, deep red tone complements the theatre’s period interior, working in harmony with original architectural features such as ornate plasterwork and timber detailing. The colour choice enhances the sense of warmth and elegance throughout the auditorium, helping to maintain the theatre’s classic atmosphere.
Wellington Velour provides excellent durability and long-term performance, making it well-suited to public spaces such as theatres. A key advantage is its acoustic performance, with a 24dB reduction in impact noise. This significantly improves sound quality within the venue, reducing footfall noise in circulation areas and enhancing the overall experience for both audiences and performers.
The carpet was professionally installed by Bogans Carpets of Liverpool. Their expertise ensured a precise installation that respected the building’s historic fabric while delivering a clean, modern finish built for long-term use. Working closely with the Gladstone Theatre Trust, the project was completed efficiently and to a high standard.
